Final: Syracuse 76, Northeastern 48

Syracuse bounces back from its first loss of the season, blowing out Northeastern in what the NCAA recognizes as Jim Boeheim’s 1,000th career coaching win.

Discounting the vacated wins as part of wide-ranging sanctions for myriad rules violations, Boeheim has 1,101 wins.

Either way, he’s still second all-time to form Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The Orange was led by Judah Mintz, Jesse Edwards and Joe Girard, who combined for 58 points.

And, has the Orange settled in to its primary defense?

SU played its trademark 2-3 zone all night.

second half

Benny Williams gets his first bucket of the night, then Taylor hits a jumper. Here comes Peter Carey for Mounir Hima.

Williams lay it in transition to give Syracuse a 30-point lead.

Torrence and Williams on the floor with Taylor, Bell and Carey. Taylor hits another jumper.

7:47 remaining: Syracue 64, Northeastern 37

Girard hits a 3 over Troutman and then lays one in over Turner in transition. Girard is up to 21 points on the night.

Maliq Brown (four), Quadir Copeland (two) are the only players to score aside from Girard (21), Edwards (19) and Mintz (15).

There will undoubtedly be plenty of postgame attention on Mintz, Girard and Edwards. But the Orange defensively have still kept the Huskies under 30% shooting for the game.

It’s been a completely different story from Tuesday night’s loss to Colgate.

Mintz has 18 points, five rebounds and five assists — and no turnovers.

11:11 remaining: Syracuse 56, Northeastern 35

Syracuse has been much more diligent about getting Edwards touches in spots where he can operate.

After a bit of cold spell offensively for SU, Girard hits a 3 and then goes coast-to-coast in transition for the lay-in, plus the foul.

Syracuse is on a 7-0 run before Northeastern answers with a basket by Masai Troutman.

Jesse Edwards hits a short jump hook in the paint, and he’s got a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds.

15:58 remaining: Syracuse 47, Northeastern 30

We’ve got a double technical on Telfort and Benny Williams.

Here’s what happened: Williams got tangled up with Telfort going up for the ball. Telfort looked to put his forearm on Williams when the two were on the floor. Williams then shoved Coleman Stucke, when he got between the two.

Maliq Brown gets a fast-break dunk.

Halftime: Syracuse 39, Northeastern 25

Judah Mintz, Joe Girard and Jesse Edwards scored 35 of the team’s 39 first-half points, including a game-high 13 points from Edwards, to pace Syracuse to a 39-25 halftime lead against Northeastern.

The Huskies withstood a 9-0 spurt at the start of the game, but they have no answer inside for Edwards, and Mintz has been sensational scoring in transition and getting into the lane to draw the defense.

Justin Taylor has been productive off the bench, grabbing three rebounds and swatting away a shot.

Defensively, the Orange has held the Huskies to 9-of-32 shooting (28.1%) in the first half.

first half

Mintz with another smooth finish in transition to give SU a 37-25 lead with about 1 minute remaining in the half.

Boeheim calls timeout with 25 seconds left to draw up a final sequence.

Mintz drives baseline and hands to Edwards for a slam right before the horn.

Syracuse ends the first half on a 13-2 run over the last 5:44.

3:50 remaining: Syracuse 34, Northeastern 23

Syracuse is 1-for-its-last-7 from the field; a 3 by Northeastern cuts the deficit to just four before a running floater by Quadir Copeland.

Syracuse is playing its trademark 2-3 zone, but it leads to another 3 by Harold Woods.

Mintz gets out in front behind the defense in transition and finishes at the rack. He’s got nine first-half points after another bucket to push the lead back up to seven.

Northeastern getting a little sloppy here, stepping out of bounds and throwing passes away.

Edwards is starting to assert him on the glass and down low. He’s got 10 points and four rebounds.

Mintz, Edwards and Girard have 30 of SU’s 34 points.

7:45: Syracuse 24, Northeastern 17

Girard hits his third 3 of the half out of the media timeout. He’s 3-for-3 to start from beyond the arc and has a game-high 11 points.

10:25 redesign: Syracuse 21, Northeastern 14

Maliq Brown and Justin Taylor sub in for Williams and Chris Bell, respectively. Symir Torrence is also in the game for Girard, who has a game-high eight points.

Brown has a dunk, and Taylor has a block and three rebounds off the bench.

15:02 remaining: Syracuse 12, Northeastern 9

Syracuse races out to a 9-0 lead on Northeastern, as the ACC Network broadcast is delayed due to the Virginia memorial service for the three football players killed in a shooting last Sunday night.

Joe Girard has five points, and Jesse Edwards and Judah Mintz have each scored a bucket with Benny Williams pulling down three rebounds early in the game.

But Northeastern quickly catches up, pulling within three on a 3 by Chase Cormier.

Another Girard 3 gives SU a 12-9 lead with 15:02 remaining in the first half.

pre-game

Good afternoon, Orange fans. We’ve got a basketball-football doubleheader Saturday evening, so build a warm fire, settle in with a frosty libation and join us as we recount all the action.

Here’s tonight’s starting five:

G Judah Mintz

G Joe Girard III

F Chris Bell

F Benny Williams

C Jesse Edwards

Syracuse men’s basketball, of course, is looking to bounce back after an 80-68 loss to Colgate on Tuesday night. Since then, the Raiders lost to Duquesne, and we’ve heard a lot of rants from fans.

Northeastern (0-3) is coming off its own devastating defeat, a 70-69 loss to Harvard on Wednesday.

If Tucker Richardson was the opponent from Tuesday night that gave SU fits, Jahmyl Telfort is that guy tonight. He’s averaging 20 points per game through the Huskies’ first three games and making 45% of his shots, including 7-for-19 (37%) from 3-point range.

Northeastern forward Chris Doherty will miss today’s game as a result of a concussion. The 6-oot-7 senior had started Northeastern’s first three games.
