6 injured at Brighton Heights funeral

Pittsburgh police said six people were shot outside a funeral in the city’s Brighton Heights neighborhood Friday. All six victims were reported to be in stable condition, police said. The shooting happened just after noon outside a funeral service for John James Hornezes, Jr., one of the three killed in a shooting on Pittsburgh’s North Side on Oct. 15. That service was being held at the Destiny of Faith Church on Brighton Street. A source says someone was driving by the church in a vehicle and fired shots. Police were not able to confirm that’s where the shots came from but did say there was “most likely” more than one shooter. Police said they believe the shooting was targeted. Video of the service obtained by Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 shows people inside the church responding to the shooting, screaming and ducking for cover. At this time, police said they do not have any information on potential suspects. Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey made a passionate plea for peace in the city. “We need to make sure this never happens again,” Gainey said. The mayor called several times for a stop to the violence, imploring people not to retaliate. Gainey was asked at one point if he though the shooting at this funeral was out of retribution. The mayor said he didn’t have all the information, but again, Pittsburgh police did confirm that this appeared to be a targeted shooting. Rev. Dr. Brenda Gregg of Destiny of Faith Church called the shooting one of the most devastating days of her life. Gregg said the church will remain open.
